Rhythm and Backup

These video lessons will teach you how to play rhythm and backup on the banjo. The most basic concepts involve playing chords with the left hand along with rhythmic picking by the right hand. For a more advanced approach, you can play licks and rolls to accompany the other musicians in a bluegrass band.

Classic Scruggs Backup Lick by Geoff Hohwald is a free video lesson covering an intermediate to advanced backup lick in the style of Earl Scruggs. Geoff will start by teaching you how to play the lick with note by note instruction.  After practicing it at several speeds, we’ll then insert this powerful up the neck lick into the song Roll in My Sweet Baby’s Arms.

Use the on-screen tablature to play along. To learn more, check out our Backup Licks & Rolls premium lesson.
