Beginning Banjo Rhythm

This free lesson by Geoff Hohwald will introduce you to right hand technique for rhythm playing.  In our switching chords lesson, we covered how to play the G, C, and D chords along with Goin’ Down that Road Feeling Bad. In this video, Geoff will show you a picking technique using your thumb to pluck a single string on the down beat and then using your index, middle, and ring fingers to play the rest of the chord on the off beat. We’ll practice this at several speeds before playing along with the rhythm track.

The next step is to start creating a more percussive sound by muting the chord with our left hand. When you feel comfortable with this video, move on to Part 2 to learn how to play a “chop”.
